PASSAGE: Matthew 5:14-16
PASSAGE GUIDE
Jesus describes His followers as “the light of the world,” not as people striving to become light through effort or performance, but as people whose identity has already been transformed by grace. The call is rooted in what Christ has done, not in image management or religious achievement. Rather than exhausting themselves trying to manufacture spiritual worth, believers are invited to live from a new identity, allowing the light already placed within them to naturally shine into the world around them.
Using the images of a city on a hill and a lamp on a stand, Jesus makes clear that faith was never intended to remain private or hidden. Light exists to be seen. Fear, comfort, and concern about others’ opinions often tempt people to conceal their faith, but kingdom life is meant to become visible in everyday actions, through generosity, courage, love, hospitality, integrity, and compassion. The mission of God is not confined to distant places or extraordinary moments; neighborhoods, workplaces, schools, and ordinary routines all become places where the light of Christ can be displayed.
At the center of this calling is the reminder that visible faith is never about drawing attention to ourselves. Jesus says good works should point people toward the Father, not toward personal recognition or reputation. Acts of service, compassion, mission, and generosity become signposts directing people to the reality and goodness of God. The passage emphasizes caring for vulnerable people, serving others practically, and participating in God’s mission in ways that reflect humility rather than self-promotion.
Baptism and communion are presented as vivid expressions of this life in the light. Baptism publicly declares that a person now belongs to Jesus and is no longer hiding in darkness, while communion continually points believers back to Christ as the true source of their life and witness. Together they remind Christians that they are not generating light on their own but carrying the light of Christ into the world. The closing challenge is simple and direct: whether going across the world or remaining in ordinary daily life, followers of Jesus are called to live visibly, faithfully, and missionally so that others might see God’s glory through them.

SUGGESTIONS FOR COMMUNITY GROUP QUESTIONS
Remember, these are “suggested” questions. You do not have to go through every single one of them. You do not need to listen to both sermons at both campuses to participate in the discussion.
DISCUSSION QUESTIONS
- What is something God has taught you in His Word this past week?
- What is something that stood out to you from the text or from the message?
- Jesus says, “You are the light of the world.” Why is it important that this is a declaration of identity rather than a command to earn it?
- What is the difference between living out of grace and living out of performance or image management?
- Why is it hard to let your faith be visible in everyday life?
- Which fears most often tempt you to hide your faith, fear of rejection, awkwardness, judgment, conflict, or something else?
- What are practical ways someone can “shine” in ordinary places like work, school, neighborhoods, or family life?
- Why is it easy for visible faith to drift into trying to impress others rather than glorify God?
- What stood out to you most about the connection between baptism, communion, and living on mission?
- Where do you sense God calling you to live more visibly and intentionally right now?
CLOSING PRAYER
- The group prays that they would live from their identity in Christ rather than performance, have courage to live visibly for Jesus, and faithfully reflect His light in everyday life.
- Close by thanking Jesus that He is the Light of the World, that His grace has brought us out of darkness, and that His Spirit empowers us to shine so others may glorify the Father.
