Session 6 | God Speaks, Part 1

SESSION SUMMARY

God wants us to know Him and follow Him. As He speaks to us, He reveals His nature so we can have faith to trust Him in the assignment He calls us to do. He reveals His purposes so we will become involved in His work and not just dream up plans of what we will do for Him. God reveals His ways so He will accomplish His work through us in a manner that gives Him glory and shows that He is God.

As you spend time in a love relationship with God, you'll come to know His voice. God has already given many messages and commands in the Bible. As you read Scripture, the Holy Spirit will be working to reveal truth about God, His purposes, and His ways. When He speaks, you must adjust yourself to the truth revealed and obey God. When you obey, you will experience Him working in and through you to accomplish His work.

All scripture is inspired by God and is profitable for teaching, for rebuking, for correction, for training in righteousness, so that the man of God may be complete, equipped for every good work. (2 Timothy 3:16-17)

DISCUSSION QUESTIONS

  • What stood out or impacted you from the chapters?
  • What has God been saying to you through His Word? How have you been responding?
  • What has God shown you about what He is currently seeking to accomplish in your life, someone else's life, or in your church? How did God make His activity evident? How have you responded?
  • What is one of the ways of God you have learned recently? (For example, God's ways are that the first will be last; the least is the greatest; by saving your life you will lose it.) How have you been applying what you learned?
  • Has God's revealing of Himself to you increased your faith to trust Him in other areas of your life as well?
  • If you haven't been hearing God speak to you through His Word, why do you think that is? What might you need to do to change that?

EXPERIENCING GOD TODAY

Prayerfully read through the list of names at the end of chapter 1 by which God has already identified Himself in Scripture. Mark the ones that you have come to know through personal experience.

Spend time with God in prayer. Ask Him to bring to your memory the times and ways He has already spoken to you through the Bible. If you have a spiritual journal, you may want to review some of the ways God previously spoke to you through His Word. As He brings experiences to your mind, list them and describe what God has said through them.
